Outdoor Recess – We will go outside if the temperature is 20 degrees and above with the windchill.  Please make sure your child is dressed for the weather.  If your child needs a new winter coat we do have some at the building.  Please contact our office and we will attempt to get one that fits your child.  Students are only allowed in the snow if they have BOTH winter boots on and snowpants.  They must have both to be in the snow.

Attendance – I know that information was sent home at the beginning of the year but I thought a reminder may be good.  The state passed a new law a few years ago outlining what schools must do regarding attendance.  Schools must send attendance letters once a child has missed 5 days of school, another when they miss 10 days and finally a meeting has to be scheduled when the child misses 12 days of school.  We do exclude days when a doctors note is provided (please send them to the office) and if we have to send them home from school because of an illness.  These are the guidelines we have been given.  If you have any questions please contact the office.

February 4 – 15 – 2nd Graders will be taking the IOWA/COGAT test.  This is done in the classrooms and will be done on the computer.  Parents will receive a copy of the results when we receive them.  We use this information to identify student learning styles, strengths and areas of improvement, and finally to determine eligibility for our enrichment program.  Please make sure your child is rested and understands to just do their best.

Monday, February 4th – 3rd Grade Reading after school – First Day  – It is every Monday and Wednesday

I hope everyone is enjoying the above freezing temperatures.   It is a great day to be outside.

February is Black History Month.  Holden will be celebrating the influence of African Americans through music.  The different genres that we will highlight include gospel, jazz, motown, and hip-hop. Each day we will focus on a specific artist from that genre.  Students will enter the building with a song playing and a student will share information on morning announcements.  At the end of the month, we have two parents who will be sharing music at a school assembly.  During the assembly, students will hear gospel singing and the playing of African drums.  Parents are welcome to attend the 30 minute assembly.  Teachers will also be doing activities in their classrooms to highlight African American achievements in different areas other than music.

We only have 4 more basketball games left to usher and then ushering will be finished for the year.  We still need help with three of the games.  Please click on the link below if you can help out.

Tomorrow is the last day of the school year.  Report cards will be coming home with students unless student fees haven’t been paid or there is an outstanding library book.  We still have about 50 students with library books that need to be returned.

5th Grade Clap Out – The 5th grades and Roosevelt graduates that attended Holden will be clapped out of the building at 3:15 tomorrow.  Parents are welcome to attend and help line the hallways for the big clap out.

The plants that line our front entry way are free to any Holden families.  This area will have grass planted in it over the summer and the railing will be removed.  Some of the plants have been marked by teachers or families already.

Finally, we need your help to collect supplies over summer for our TEA room (makerspace).  We will be collecting the following items in August.

Plastic water bottles and 2 liter bottles
balsa wood/ rods
different kinds of tape
Fabric
plastic sheets/table cloth
cardboard
toilet paper/paper towel rolls
pipe cleaners
pvc pipe

Any other materials that may be used to help create.

I hope all families have a safe and relaxing summer.  Please let us know if will not be back next year.  This information is important as we accept families for open enrollment based on our numbers.  I would like to thank all the parent volunteers from this school year.  We couldn’t have done it without your help.  I would also like to thank our HSA board members for another very productive year; Stacia Kaschak, Wendy Miller, Melissa Koher, Eva Frank, Lindsay Slack, and Rebecca Harder.

Change in Dismissal

Dear Holden Parents,

Dismissal is a very crazy time of the day. We are trying to make sure that students are getting messages that may impact how they are getting home. Most of our messages come into the office around 3:00 and we begin dismissing students at 3:10. If we miss a call and it is on voicemail we may not get the message until after students leave. We are asking for your help to insure that all students arrive home safely. If there is any change to your child’s dismissal procedure please call our office before 2:00 or send a note to your child’s teacher.

Thank you for your help.

Saturday was our first Kent State football game we ushered.  It was wet but the Flashes pulled it off.  This year we will be awarding the top three classrooms for ushering volunteers with a pizza party.  Right now the top three rooms are Longanecker, Wollam, Sweigart, and Yeager.  I would also like to thank the volunteers listed below for their help on Saturday.
